What's so great about...Overnight Vision Correction?
WHAT IS IT?
If you're too squeamish for laser-eye surgery, too vain (or forgetful) for glasses and daily contacts irritate, i-GO contact lenses could be the answer.
Worn overnight, the lenses temporarily reshape and flatten the curvature of your eyes while you sleep, correcting your vision by the time you remove them in the morning.
DO I REALLY NEED IT?
Those who suffer from dry eyes which are exacerbated by daily lenses will welcome the difference, and they are a convenient, safe alternative for sporty types or kids. Moorfield trained Dr Charles Babumba uses i-GO at his City Eyes Clinic (020 7638 6192) and has successfully fitted children as young as seven. But lenses are only suitable for moderate shortsightedness of no more than -5, and with mild astigmatism, up to -1.5. The lower your prescription the better, as your eyes are likely to ‘hold' the corrected shape for longer.
IS IT WORTH IT? As well as temporary correction, they can stop your vision degenerating further and Babumba's anecdotal evidence suggests they can permanently reduce your prescription. The slight discomfort caused by the hard lenses was relieved by closing my eyes. But if you have a higher prescription (mine is -1.5), you might experience blurry vision, spotting or ghosting (blurry shapes in your peripheral vision) for the first week and you may initially need top-up lenses halfway through the day as the reshaping wears off. The results are worth it, though - Babumba has patients who wear their lenses as little as one or two nights a week once their eyes have adjusted to them.
An initial i-GO consultation to confirm suitability for the lenses and including a sight test costs around £50, 4 follow up appointments including the first pair of lenses and cleaning solutions is around £200 followed by monthly direct debits of about £40 to include a second pair of lenses as spares, cleaning solutions, regular 6 monthly checks, annual sight tests and a new pair of lenses every 12 months.
