A new contact lens has been developed that could specifically aid sufferers of presbyopia.
Researchers at the University of Alabama School of Optometry have developed the lens which treats presbyopia, or the slow loss of the ability to focus on objects close-by.
Adam Gordon, an associate professor at the school, said: "There's a huge number of people who don't want to give up contacts due to presbyopia, or don't want to wear reading glasses over their contact lenses."
He added that the new, multifocal lenses are a "closer simulation of the way
natural vision works and the way eyes are designed to focus".
For the over 40s who are starting to sufferer with presbyoppia then monovision using ortho k lenses is an option.
The dominant eye is corrected at night using an
orthok lens whilst the other eye remains uncorrected and is used for reading.
Worn at night the ortho k lenses help restore the eye to its
natural vision state, meaning that there is no need for glasses or contact lenses during the day.
They are particularly useful for active people who enjoy sport and are looking for a way to avoid wearing visionary aids.
