Ortho k cure for nearsightedness 'very exciting'
First year results into the benefits of ortho k lenses on the halting of myopia in children have come back positively.

The initial results of the SMART (Stabalization of Myopia by Accelerated Reshaping Technique) trial have found that shortsightedness can be slowed or halted with the lenses.

Dr S Barry Eiden, co-principal investigator of the study, said: "Correcting and controlling shortsightedness in children is very important because it potentially contributes to eye disease conditions and problems in academic and social activities."

A total of 300 children aged eight to 14 were studied in the survey, with the results said to be "very exciting" by Dr Robert Davis from Davis Eye Care Associates.

"The outcomes of this study may revolutionise how we manage young nearsighted patients from this point forward," he said.

A recent study found that children who wore contact lenses were more confident than those who wore glasses, with girls most likely to see a boost in their self esteem.
