One US optometrist has been singing the praises of
ortho k overnight contact lenses, saying they are a particularly good option for people with active lifestyles.
Ortho-k lenses work by reshaping the cornea while wearers sleep so that they have clear vision, without the need for glasses, the next day.
As the cornea is elastic it will keep the corrected shape for up to 36 hours.
Dr Jeffrey Michelman, a doctor of optometry at the Invasion Optometric Center in Los Angeles, said that overnight lenses mean that people do not have to go through the discomfort of eye laser surgery.
He added that they also work out much cheaper than eye laser surgery and can even work out cheaper than wearing glasses in the long run as there is no need to buy spare glasses, prescription sunglasses and special sports goggles.
"Overnight vision correction is great for people with active lifestyles as the procedure offers freedom from conventional contact lenses and glasses, and the ability to see properly all day. The eye care treatment is up to 70 per cent less expensive than most LASIK surgery procedures as well," Dr Michelman continued.
Ortho-k lenses are ideal for sporty people as wearing glasses or contact lenses can be a major hindrance. The
natural vision that overnight contact lenses give people may also boost their performance.
Discussing the effectiveness of ortho-k contact lenses, the expert cited a study conducted for the US Food and Drug Administration which found that 95 per cent of participants who tried ortho-k lenses achieved eyesight of 20/40 or better and 73 per cent achieved 20/20 vision.
