Contact lens-wearing prime minister Gordon Brown has had to deny claims that he is going blind.

Mr Brown, who has been blind in one eye since he was a teenager, has spoken to NBC Nightly News in the US that the sight in his working eye is still fine.

"I lost the sight in one of my eyes playing sports," he said.

"I had all sorts of operations. I then had one operation on the other eye and that was very successful so my sight is not deteriorating at all."

According to the Times, earlier this year Mr Brown suffered the misfortune of dropping his contact lens just before he was about to give a speech.

Such an incident could have been avoided if he chose to use ortho k contact lenses instead of the regular day wear option.

Worn overnight, the lenses are taken out once awake and vision is restored, so Mr Brown would have not had the opportunity to lose them in the day.
