China turning to contact lenses
China is thought to have been the originator of the orthokeratology technique, and it seems that it is now catching up with the rest of the world in contact lens wear.

GfK China has revealed that the Chinese contact lens market has grown considerably in recent years.

Contact lenses now account for 12 per cent of the entire optics market, with many Chinese people turning to them as an alternative to glasses.

In a release, GfK Retail and Technology said that the country was now turning away from "traditional vision correction" techniques.

The move could mean that ortho k lenses will soon be popular in China.

It is believed that centuries ago, Chinese soldiers placed weights on their eyes to correct their vision, inadvertently developing a technology that has now become orthokeratology.

Worn overnight, ortho k lenses help to correct the eye while sleeping, leading to perfect vision for those who are shortsighted during the day.
