The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust is embarking on a major new study into the benefits and shortfalls of different
corrective eye surgery procedures.
Patients in West Yorkshire are helping specialists at the trust delve into the treatment of glaucoma - including alternatives to
laser eye surgery.
It is believed that the pioneering research will offer key insights into the incidence and progression of the degenerative condition, which causes irreversible blindness, but also into the efficacy of laser surgery options and alternative
vision correction procedures.
The trust is just one of 16 institutions taking part in the new Effectiveness of Cataract Extraction in Angle-closure Glaucoma study, which is being led by researchers from the University of Aberdeen.
It is hoped that the research will clarify whether a radical new
corrective eye surgery technique, which involves replacing a patient's eye lens with a synthetic alternative is better than
corrective laser surgery or active eye drops.
Consultant ophthalmologist at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Nitin Anand, said: "The results will give us valuable information about the treatment of glaucoma, and I would like to thank all patients involved in the trials."
The trust's medical director Dr Yvette Oade said: "Taking part in the trials is a great endorsement of Mr Anand's renowned expertise in glaucoma and the excellent reputation of our ophthalmology department."
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust's announcement of its participation in the
corrective eye surgery study coincides with World Glaucoma Day, which is being used to promote the benefits of early detection and treatment of the condition.
Regular eye tests can also flag up other problems - such as myopia.
Myopia, or short-sightedness is a relatively common condition that can be treated in a variety of ways, including with i-GO's Ortho K corrective lenses.
