A new procedure has been developed which could prevent older people going blind due to age-related macular degeneration.
The technique, which was developed by eye expert professor John Marshall from King's College London, relies on lasers to bring the eye back to
natural vision.
Blindness bodies have been quick to praise the new technique, which could help save the sight of millions of people.
According to the BBC, a spokesperson for the Macular Disease Society said: "If it is shown to work it is an extremely exciting development and potentially a real breakthrough.
"It will not sadly be useful in those who have already lost their sight to AMD, but it may have great hope for the future."
Professor Marshall has suggested that the treatment could be available within two to five years.
Approximately 200,000 people in the UK suffer with AMD, which develops when a membrane at the back of the eye becomes clogged, leading to cloudy vision.
