With the advent of spring, the number of people suffering from allergies increases dramatically.
Unfortunately some are hit harder than others particularly contact lens wearers.
But as eye care and the technology surrounding it get more advanced, myopia sufferers may start to consider other
eye correction options to reduce the impact of allergies.
According to new research in the US, ocular allergies affect one in every five people in the country and they are the most common reason people consult healthcare professionals.
Moreover, it is believed that half of those that do have allergy problems suffer form eye allergies to some degree.
Of those with eye allergy problems, two thirds claim that they are a year-round issue, but become more noticeable during spring.
Recent research conducted by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America showed that allergy problems often prevent people from wearing contact lenses highlighting the benefits of different
eye correction options such as i-GO's Ortho K overnight corrective lenses.
Meanwhile, the AAFA claimed that more than one in ten contact lenses wearers had abandoned their daily lenses because of allergies.
This also highlights the benefits of Ortho K contact lenses, which are worn overnight and do away with a person's need for contact lenses or glasses while they are awake.
Ortho K lenses, unlike other
eye correction options such as
corrective laser surgery, have the added benefit that their effects are not permanent. With
laser eye surgery for instance, damage caused to the eye, which can result in blindness, is often irreversible.
Another research piece presented at the 87th annual meeting of The American Academy of Optometry showed that just over a third of contact lens wearers replaced their lenses as prescribed.
Commenting on the situation, Ophthalmologist Paul Karpecki said:"As contact lenses age, they accumulate deposits that may impact the ocular surface
"Factor in the research that shows these patients are not being compliant with their wearing and replacement schedule, and it's no surprise that many are experiencing ocular discomfort and distress."
