Concerns raised over DIY corrective laser surgery
The alarm has been raised over a potentially dangerous commercial corrective laser surgery offering.

LASIK@Home is offering do-it-yourself corrective laser eye surgery to myopia sufferers for as little as USD 100, it has been reported.

According to the Jakarta Post, one of its readers has stumbled across a website which offers the DIY kits.

The firm behind the potentially dangerous laser eye surgery kits claims users need to follow just four simple steps to cure their myopia in the comfort of their own home.

"You'll be seeing clearly before you know it," the website states.

Sri Ram, the reader who discovered the home laser surgery kit, told the news provider: "The kit comes with a laser, a mild sedative, eye drops to prevent blinking during surgery, and a detailed instruction guide.

"Maybe [myopia sufferers] use the other eye to read the instructions while operating," he added.

He claimed that the economic downturn is in part to blame for the upturn in DIY surgery - including corrective laser surgery.

With the dangers of standard corrective laser surgery well-documented - even when conducted by a qualified professional - it seems that this DIY cure for myopia is an extremely risky option.

A good alternative to either professionally-conducted or DIY corrective laser surgery is the use of Ortho K overnight corrective lenses. Unlike laser surgery, there are no permanent side-effects associated with overnight contact lenses and - unlike DIY laser surgery - they are medically proven to arrest the progression of short-sightedness.

Earlier this month, Chang Zheng, director of ophthalmology department at AIER Eye Hospital in Guangzhou, claimed that the dramatic increase in popularity of corrective laser surgery could put patients' eyesight at risk.

Zheng told Dahe Health News that some surgeons are performing as many as 180 procedures in a single day.
