Smoking can not only hamper
vision correction efforts, but it can actually damage a person's eyesight and even increase their chances of developing conditions such as cataracts.
Speaking to the Courier-Journal, Dr Emily Chew claimed that the first thing people should do if they want life-long healthy vision is quit smoking.
Dr Chew claimed that the health consequences of smoking are well known, so there is no excuse for carrying on.
She said: "Smoking should be avoided at all costs. It's never good for you."
"We know that it increases risks of cataract formation, for example. People who smoke have two times the risk of having macular degeneration than those who do not smoke," she added.
The detrimental effects of smoking may cause permanent macular degeneration, making any
cure for myopia - such as CST's Ortho K lenses - much less effective.
Dr Chew also highlighted the importance of having regular eye examinations to ensure that vision problems do not develop unnoticed.
She said: "There are diseases that actually steal your vision but very quietly and without any fanfare.
"You don't even realise it."
Dr Chew even claimed that visiting a qualified ophthalmologist can benefit a person in a number of ways - particularly those who are already managing vision problems.
Something as simple as switching from standard, daily contact lenses to Ortho K overnight corrective lenses could have a number of
vision correction benefits - such as doing away with the need for dry eye drops to deal with allergy problems.
Ortho K lenses are particularly useful for professional athletes, who need a
vision correction solution that does not affect their performance on the track or field. Overnight corrective lenses do away with the need for daily contacts or glasses and carry none of the risks associated with corrective
laser eye surgery.
