The importance of regular eye checkups has been highlighted by
vision correction expert Dr Rodger Silverstein.
According to the eye specialist, all women should make time to have their eyesight assessed by a professional ophthalmologist - particularly when a failure to diagnose vision problems early on can result in permanent damage which cannot be treated later in life.
Speaking as Women's Eye Safety and Health Month gets underway, Dr Silverstein said that two-thirds of blindness and visual impairment occurs in women - with risk factors such as age, smoking and hormonal changes potentially wreaking havoc with their eyesight.
Dr Silverstein said that on top of spotting problems that can be treated with simple
vision correction techniques - such as the prescription of i-GO's Ortho K corrective contact lenses - an eye exam by a qualified ophthalmologist can spot underlying health problems.
By looking at the tissue and blood vessels at the back of a person's eyes, healthcare professionals can observe a person's heartbeat, nutrient levels and identify possible warning signs of disease.
"Without a certified vision screening or eye exam, women may have serious undetected vision and health problems. In fact, some potentially blinding eye diseases and conditions can be successfully treated if detected early," Dr Silverstein said.
He added: "Possible vision conditions such as glaucoma and diabetes can be diagnosed with a quick eye exam."
Recently, Dr Lee Sao Bing highlighted how important it is that people take care of their eyes during their working day.
He stated that for people who use a computer for extended periods of time, the first signs of eye deterioration include blurred vision, irritation and headaches.
Dr Bing noted that while these problems are addressable with simple
vision correction techniques, when left untreated they can become more serious.
He also highlighted the dangers of over-wearing contact lenses - something that may cause people to consider alternatives, such as i-GO's Ortho K overnight lenses.
