More than five million British adults avoid playing sport because of the need for prescription eyewear, according to Ultralase.
The eye laser surgery company surveyed 1,000 glasses and contact lens-wearing sportspeople across the UK.
The study revealed that up to 5.5 million people across the UK avoid playing sport altogether due to their eyesight, with swimming, martial arts and rugby losing out the most.
All of those questioned said that their performance was compromised by their lack of
natural vision with 64 per cent admitting to not wearing their eyewear during sport.
One-third of people said that their compromised eyesight led them to misjudge distances, with one-sixth admitting to missing a ball due to a lack of coordination caused by poor eyesight and 12 per cent had made errors such as mistaking a team mate for an opposition player.
Jon Hughes, Ultralase director, said: "We treat a large number of sportspeople, from professional athletes to amateurs, all of whom want freedom from wearing glasses and lenses."
Ortho k contact lenses can improve sporting performance by removing any impediment of
natural vision such as glasses which can break, steam up or fall off, or conventional contact lenses which can fall out, become irritable and are banned in some sports.
Over
night contact lenses are worn while asleep and gently reshape the cornea to provide
natural vision when they are removed during the day.
Many sportspeople would not risk the possible
eye laser surgery complications that could end a career, making
ortho k contact lenses are the perfect solution.
