Ortho-k lenses for sport  worn only while sleeping may provide the solution to Phil ‘The Power' Taylor's worsening eyesight problem which he blamed for his shock 4-1 defeat to Dave Chisnall at the second round stage of the latest Ladbrokes Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Championship at Alexandra Palace. Despite winning five major tour titles during 2011 and being voted as the PDC Player of The Year - a major accolade for the World number one - his early defeat at the World Championship led to him suggesting that he might have to face up to retirement over the next two or three years.

After briefly experimenting with wearing glasses at the oche during 2010, he admitted that his failing eyesight would need to be addressed if he was to be able to carry on at the highest level of the sport and said after his World Championship defeat: "My eyesight's gone or it's not half of what it used to be." However, wearing glasses can pose additional problems for darts players since they can be susceptible to glare under the bright lights of most major darts venues as well as slipping position when the heat around the oche leads to facial perspiration. Hence the new ortho-k lenses for sport  which correct short-sight overnight and are then removed each morning could provide the perfect solution.

Ortho-k lenses for sport  are small custom-designed contact lenses which gently flatten the surface of the eye while the wearer is asleep to correct the individual's focusing distance and the effect lasts for over 24 hours after the lenses are removed. So this means that the wearer has perfect natural vision all day long until the lenses are reinserted at night. For older wearers over 40 like Phil, the lenses have the added benefit of helping address age-related presbyopia which is the clinical term for reading difficulties when books, newspapers, restaurant menus and many other everyday printed items seem to be blurry. Hence as Phil formulates his plans for 2012 - which he has already stated will include a new fitness campaign - he has a new option to consider for correcting his eyesight which could help to ensure he keeps his crown as King of the oche!
