Contact lenses for many are preferable over glasses and
ortho k lenses in particular are good for sports players.
However, whatever the lenses it is still important to be careful when putting them in and taking them out of the eye.
That problem was learnt the hard way by the captain of Watford football team Jay DeMerit, who has now had to get eye surgery after cutting himself with a lens.
Speaking to Yanks Abroad last month, DeMerit said: "It was a freak thing. We were in our hotel and as I took out my contact, it cut my eye.
"You just can't mess with your eyes so I'm going to manage it right and try to get better as soon as possible."
Ortho k lenses are often better for sports players - as they are worn at night it means that there is no reason to worry about vision during the day.
In addition, whereas normal daywear lenses could get grit and dirt stuck to them,
ortho k lenses are only used while asleep, meaning the eye is free from visual apparatus and less likely to become irritated.
