At this time of year, many Brits will be leaving the rain behind to take on the snowy slopes of mountains abroad.

However, one thing that few people will remember to look after is their eyes.

That is according to the Eyecare Trust, which has suggested that the high levels of ultra-violet light up in mountain ranges can cause temporary damage to the eyes.

The Trust has recommended a number of ways to avoid such problems.

Skiing goggles are a must for most skiers, but for those with less than perfect vision it can be irritating to have to purchase a prescription pair.

Ortho k contact lenses can help avoid the problem and mean you can ski in your favourite goggles or glasses without worrying about needing special filters or lenses.

As orthokeratology contact lenses are worn overnight and taken out in the morning, skiers will find that they have crystal clear vision during the day without the need for any prescriptions.

The Eyecare Trust has suggested that in addition to purchasing a good pair of goggles with sufficient UV protection, it is also important to make sure that they fit well.

They also urge "shopping before skiing" as it is likely skiers will have to pay more while abroad.

If you are skiing this year and are keen to avoid prescription skiing goggles, then consider the benefits of ortho k contact lenses – no need for tests, no expense for extra goggles and you can ski all day without suffering from dry eye caused by normal daywear lenses.
