The American-born Watford football player who damaged his eye while playing a match has undergone surgery.
Jay DeMerit, who got a piece of grit stuck under his contact lens before the game, underwent the invasive surgery on October 17th.
According to the Watford FC website, the grit stuck under the lens resulted in a "serious eye infection" and no date has been set for his return.
Although a rare problem, the injury displays one of the risks that can occur when playing sport and wearing contact lenses.
Ortho k lenses would have prevented Mr DeMerit from experiencing such a problem.
The overnight vision correction lenses help to correct eyesight while asleep and once awake they are taken out.
For someone such as a football player they can be a useful way of avoiding the possibility of grit under lenses, or other problems such as dust or pollen sticking to lenses, which can cause irritation.
