Contact lenses for sport worn only while sleeping could have offered a surgery-free alternative for NBA star Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat who recently underwent LASIK treatment after seeing the successful outcome of the procedure experienced by his girlfriend, actress Gabrielle Union. Indeed, he even sought out the same doctor who performed her LASIK procedure, Florida-based "Surgeon to the Stars" Dr. Cory Lessner. However, unlike LASIK the new overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses is a non-surgical treatment for shortsightedness which provides perfect daytime vision after the lenses are removed each morning. Wearing the corrective lenses only at night while sleeping means that participants in all sports - especially water-based or contact sports - can play full-on without needing to wear conventional daytime contact lenses or other forms of prescription eyewear.
Wade's decision to opt for LASIK has left him as pleased with his results as his girlfriend was with hers. He said, "It's actually an amazing experience and nothing to be scared of. My eyes are getting a lot better by the minute." However, like all sports participants who undergo LASIK surgery, Wade will need to be cautious about risking any eye contact during training sessions while the eyes continue the post-LASIK healing process. This is to avoid dislodging the flap which is cut into the cornea and peeled back while the treatment takes place then replaced once the treatment is concluded. Hence why increasing numbers of people are opting for the new non-surgical overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses for sport .
Dr. Lessner is one of the leading laser vision correction surgeons in the US with more than 19 years of experience and 25,000 successful surgeries completed including a number of high profile sports and showbiz personalities. He said: "Dwyane approached me because he was not entirely happy with his vision. His procedure went like clockwork." Undoubtedly, with experienced refractive surgeons like Dr Lessner, LASIK procedures are almost completely routine treatments which can deliver great results as his track record indicates. However, it is also good to know that shortsighted sports participants who are keen to find a better vision solution than conventional daytime contact lenses or other forms of prescription eyewear can now opt for overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses for sport as worn by Jo McGilchrist (England Women's Rugby player) and Akaash Bhatia (5th ranked professional featherweight boxer).
