Contact lenses for sport have improved Vusi Sibanda's batting form dramatically after almost three years during which he struggled to match the scores he had recorded pre-2008. As a long-standing glasses wearer, he had established himself as a key member of the Zimbabwean cricket team and had been averaging over 35 runs per innings in ODI matches. Then his form fell away and his average dropped down to below 20, a change he believes was entirely due to problems with his glasses on the pitch. Sibanda says: "It sounds a bit weird, but the glasses would start falling off because of the sweat and it would get annoying because I had to keep putting them back on."
When Sibanda switched to contact lenses, the change resulted in improved vision and, in turn, better form with the bat. Since the start of 2011, his form has improved remarkably and he now averages 44 runs in ODI innings, becoming once again one of Zimbabwe's key players. He says: "It became easier to pick the line and length of deliveries and I seemed to have a lot more time than I used to have." Also, not having to wear glasses made Sibanda more comfortable at the crease. The switch to contact lenses for sport - that he had delayed for years because he did not like the idea of putting something in his eyes - has proved to be a turning point for his cricketing career.
For cricketers like Sibanda and all other sports participants, wearing glasses can be a major disadvantage given a range of issues including adverse weather (eg rain), movement during play and imprecise focusing between near and distant objects. Consequently, contact lenses for sport can help performance improve significantly. However, for water-based and contact sports as well as for dry eye and hay fever sufferers, conventional daytime contact lenses are not the best solution. Instead, sports participants can switch to overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses which are only worn at night while sleeping and then removed each morning. These special lenses correct shortsightedness during sleep and allow the wearer to enjoy crisp clear daytime vision without needing to wear anything, with the correction lasting all day until the lenses are reinserted at night.
