A woman has spoken out about the fear her child would be bullied for wearing glasses.
Alexa Fuertardo, who was born with glaucoma and cataracts, had to wear glasses that made her eyes look big as a child.
However, when she discovered that her new-born daughter was also suffering from the same problem, Alexa relived her memories.
Speaking to WWLTV.com, she said: "I was scared and I was crying because I felt so bad that she would have to through what I went through.
"I was teased a lot, especially with the bifocal glasses, because they made my eyes really big. I never wanted to go to school because of it, never really had [many] friends."
The worry that a child may have to wear glasses can be a big one for a parent.
Although glasses are often seen as fashionable now, school children are not always kind to those who look different.
Ortho k contact lenses could be a solution for short sighted children looking for an alternative to glasses.
The lenses, which correct eyesight overnight, help to avoid the need for glasses or day wear lenses.
Ortho k contact lenses are simply placed in the eye at night and removed when awake the wearer is then able to see perfectly clearly without any additional visual aids for the rest of the day.
Previous studies have shown that the lenses can even help children with
myopia control the condition.
They can also help children who suffer with confidence issues.
