The Texas Ophthalmological Association (TOA) has highlighted some tips for protecting vision.
Commenting at the start of their EyeSmart campaign, Dr Galen Kemp, TOA president has noted that simple things can help keep sight problems at bay.
Among a list of ideas given by Dr Kemp is avoiding smoking, wearing sunglasses and making sure to eat a good diet heavy in carrots, leafy green vegetables and high in vitamin C and E.
For those that wear contact lenses, there are some particularly important eye health instructions.
"Follow your eye doctor's instructions regarding the care and use of contact lenses," the TOA advised.
"Abuse, such as sleeping in contacts that are not approved for overnight wear, using saliva or water as wetting solution, using expired solutions and using disposable contact lenses beyond their wear can result in corneal ulcers, severe pain and even vision loss."
Those that are worried about complicated contact lens rules could look into the benefits of
Ortho-k lenses.
As they are worn at night, many of the associated problems linked to day-wear lenses are obsolete, meaning that the user can carry on their day as normal without thinking about contacts.
