Staring at a computer for the majority of the day is an unfortunate fact that many people have to face.

However, for sufferers of dry eye it can be an intolerable necessity, with itchy, red eyes made worse by day wear contact lenses.

A new survey by The Eye Care Trust and Simplyhealth has found that more than two fifths of workers are unaware that their employer can help cut the cost of eye care.

James Glover from Simplyhealth said: "Since health and safety legislation came into effect in 1993, employers have had an obligation to protect the eyesight of employees who regularly use a computer screen for periods of over one hour, sometimes less, per day.

"This includes paying for regular sight tests and glasses if the optometrist prescribes them specifically for computer use."

For some people glasses are undesirable and contact lenses are an alternative.

Ortho k contact lenses could be a great alternative to day wear contact lenses for those who suffer from the effects of dry eye.

Worn at night, orthokeratology contact lenses help to avoid the irritation that can be caused by contact lenses worn in the day.

Ian Anderson, chairman of The Eyecare Trust, urged Brits to get an eye examination every two years unless otherwise advised.

"As well as providing a valuable insight into the health of the eyes, a sight test also acts an essential general health check uncovering a number of other underlying health problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and an increased risk of stroke," he said.
