A US university has begun to look into the impact of contact lenses on general eye health.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Optometry are hoping to answer the question by analyzing tears.
Luch Kehinde, a doctoral student at UAB in the Vision Science Graduate Program, found that minor changes in eye biology can help inform lens-wear prescriptions.
"It is helping us to understand and get a clearer picture of eye health during the course of a month, which is the length of time some people choose to keep in their extended-wear contacts," she said.
Ms Kehinde added that lens choice "should be taken seriously" so as to reduce "the risk of eye infections and other sight problems".
A total of 80 volunteers took part in the study, which it is hoped may create new diagnostic tools to help identify patients suitable for extended-wear lenses.
