Keeping to a healthy diet may help lower the risk of age-related macular degenerations (AMD).
Research from the University of Sydney in Australia discovered that a diet rich in fish, nuts, olive oil and other omega-three fatty acids is associated with a lower risk for the disease.
Jennifer S L Tan, one of the authors behind the study, suggested that it was important to find an "appropriate balance" to "maximise nutritional benefit".
It is thought that the fatty acids may protect the eyes by preventing a build-up of plaque in the arteries or reducing inflammation, as well as preventing blood vessel formation and oxygen-related cell damage in the retina.
In a related report, it was discovered that unsaturated fatty acids found in processed foods could be at higher risk of developing AMD.
As well as eye health, a diet high in such fats can also lead to heart problems, with an increase in the risk of coronary heart disease.
