Symptoms of dry eye worsen in many women at menopause, an expert has highlighted.
Dr Brian McDonough, medical editor for KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia, believes that chronic dry eye is a common medical condition but many people do not take it seriously enough to go to their doctor about it.
According to Dr McDonough, the condition worsens at menopause for many women. In fact, one in 12 women over the age of 50 suffer from it.
People with dry eyes wake up every morning with dry itchy eyes and blurry vision. There are medications to treat it but they can wear off.
Dry eye is also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca and occurs when the eye does not produce the right quantity or quality of tears. Often there is not enough of a lipid layer giving the eye the correct lubrication.
Discomfort can be exacerbated by not blinking enough, such as when working at computer or long car journeys. Other factors such as smoke, pollen or wearing contact lenses for too long are also common causes of dry eyes.
Over
night contact lenses can eliminate the symptoms of dry eyes for many people.
Ortho K contact lenses are worn at night when they gently reshape the cornea. They are taken out during the day with the result of
natural vision as well as eliminating the need for eye wear.
As conventional daytime contact lenses do not need to be worn, more oxygen and less irritants reach the eye, alleviating the symptoms of dry eyes.
Over
night contact lenses are also made from a highly permeable material which allows oxygen to get to the eyes even when they are being worn.
