Many diabetics missing pivotal eye checks
More than 60 per cent of adults that suffer with diabetes are not receiving the vital annual health checks they need, a charity has claimed.

Diabetes UK said that checks including retinal screening, body mass index screening and blood pressure that are crucial for the management of the condition are being missed.

Not attending such checks can lead to blindness, heart disease, kidney failure and amputation.

Douglas Smallwood, the chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: "Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the UK's working population, causes 100 amputations a week and accounts for one in ten people in UK hospitals.

"It's essential people with diabetes receive all the necessary components of annual check-ups and are empowered to work more closely with their diabetes team."

Other important tests include cholesterol levels and checking on the condition of feet.

The report comes after data from nearly 5,000 GP practices in England and Wales contributed statistics for an NHS national diabetes report.
