British prime minister Gordon Brown has two tears in his retina.

The politician, who is well known as a contact lens wearer and is blind in one eye, visited Moorfields Eye Hospital in London in the summer, where the diagnosis was made.

In a statement, a spokesperson for 10 Downing Street said: "This summer Mr Brown had his annual eye check-up, which was fine. Later he had his retina checked.

"After examinations surgeons found that the retina had two minor tears. However, as there has been no further deterioration and no change in his eyesight, they decided against further operations."

The spokesperson added that Mr Brown revisited the hospital late last week and his eye was "fine".

Mr Brown has been under a lot of pressure to reveal if he has vision problems.

Earlier this year, the prime minister found himself in difficulty after he accidently lost a contact lens before an important speech.

Ortho k lenses can help avoid such potential situations - as they are worn at night and taken out in the morning, there is no change to take them out or lose them during the day.
