A girl who failed to wear goggles when on a sunbed may end up losing her eyesight.

Sam Laing, 23, has spoken to the Daily Mail about how her prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light has led to her developing growths in both eyes.

The customer services manager said she avoided wearing goggles as she didn't want to be left with white marks on her face.

"The most worrying thing is that even if the growths are removed, they could return and I've been told I will have to wear dark glasses on sunny days in the future," she told the publication.

"I just hope that what's happened to me serves as a warning to other sunbed users that they can be really dangerous."

The growths, known as pterygium, are usually seen in men that live near the equator and are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet light.

Natural vision can be impaired by such exposure, so it is important to follow health and safety guidance with sun beds and other similar technology.
