Many people find it difficult to distinguish which eye care advice they should follow and which are simply myths, it has been claimed.
Writing for 5News, Dr Marguerite McDonald, a cornea/refractive/anterior segment specialist with the Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island and a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at NYU School of Medicine in New York, said that one of the biggest eye care myths is that eating carrots will boost people's
natural vision.
Stating that this is probably the largest eye care myth, she added that while carrots are high in vitamin A, which is good for the eyes, only a small amount is needed for good
natural vision and this can be achieved through a normal balanced diet.
Dr McDonald added that another popular myth is that people only need to go for eye tests when there is something wrong. She suggested that people should make an appointment with their optician each year, even if they do not have any noticeable problems as this can help detect any symptoms of eye disease.
Another myth, which is sure to anger anyone with
symptoms of dry eye, is that the condition is not a "real" disease.
However, according to Dr McDonald, the majority of eye care professionals agree that chronic dry eye is a real progressive disease that can significantly affect everyday activities, such as reading and driving.
Orthok over
night contact lenses can help people suffering from the
symptoms of dry eye due to regular use of contact lenses.
Contact lenses can often cause dry eyes, especially if people do not blink enough or have been wearing lenses for a long period of time.
The
OrthoK lenses are worn overnight; gently reshaping the eye as the wearer sleeps, meaning that the next day they have perfect vision without the need for regular contact lenses or glasses.
