The recession has encouraged many to cut corners on shopping bills, trips abroad and travel expenses.

However, one area that Brits are being warned against cutting back on is their eye health.

The British Contact Lens Association has highlighted a recent YouGov poll that shows one in ten contact lens wearers would consider having less frequent checkups, while a fifth have said that they would wear contacts for longer than advised.

Professor Roger Buckley, a clinical adviser at the General Optical Council said that many are putting their eye health at risk.

"It's essential that patients follow the advice of their eye care practitioner when it comes to contact lens care," he noted.

Other unsafe contact usage included wearing lenses at night that were not designed for overnight use to avoid buying solution and wearing a damaged or torn lens.

Anyone considering other options to normal contact lenses may want to consider looking into Ortho-k.

Worn at night, the specially constructed lenses help shape the eye during sleep leading to better vision during the day.
