For contact lens wearers, going to the cinema can exacerbate dry eyes, but now watching 3D films such as the newly-released blockbuster Avatar can result in a headache as well, according to a leading eye expert.
The film has already earned more than $1 billion (£600 million) at the box office and has caused a surge in demand for 3D movies and television sets.
Dr Michael Rosenberg, an ophthalmology professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, has offered some explanation as to why such films cause headaches.
He said: "There are a lot of people walking around with very minor eye problems, for example a minor muscle imbalance, which under normal circumstances the brain deals with naturally."
"That translates into greater mental effort, making it easier to get a headache," he added.
Rick Heineman, a spokesman for RealD, which provides theatres with 3D equipment, said that headaches and nausea was the main reason for 3D technology not taking off in the past, but new digital developments address many of the problems for these conditions.
