Contact lenses for dry eyes  worn only while sleeping combined with a newly launched ocular nutrition may provide the long awaited solution to the severe eye strain problem caused by today's lifestyle with its greatly increased emphasis on screen-based activities - TV, computer and mobile phone - which is present both at school or work and in personal time. The concentration on near vision objects typically reduces blink rates by as much as 80% thereby limiting the amount of tear film which is generated as a moisturising agent for the eye. This problem is exacerbated by the evidence that people spend far more time indoors than they did 20-30 years ago. Since natural light outdoors can be up to ten times brighter than artificial light indoors, the problem of eye strain is worsened.

A further problem of today's indoor lifestyle is that homes, schools and offices tend to be air-conditioned and such climate-controlled systems actually remove moisture from the air so exercising a further drying impact on people's eyes. Consequently, dry eye syndrome has become a huge problem in eye health affecting millions of people in the UK. In turn, this has spawned a major global industry producing drugs, drops and devices to try and combat the problem, none of which appear to provide a completely effective treatment which works for everyone. Hence the new overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses for dry eyes  may at last provide a treatment option that can solve the problem - possibly reinforced by a specially formulated ocular vitamin to actively treat the condition.

In terms of the latter, EyeScience Labs, a leading developer of ocular nutrition, has launched a new vitamin which they have trademarked as ‘Computer Eye Strain Formula' especially to target dry eye sufferers whose screen-focused lives are both causing and exacerbating their condition. Jeff Northup, President and CEO of EyeScience Labs says: "The ingredients in our formula help improve symptoms associated with tiredness, soreness, dryness and blurry vision." For daytime contact lens wearers in particular, whose eyes become itchy and irritable by the end of the day because of the dryness problem, taking the new ocular vitamin could provide alleviation of their condition but switching to ortho-k contact lenses for dry eyes  can make the problem go away completely.
