Contact lenses for dry eyes worn only while sleeping provide the perfect solution for shortsighted dry eye sufferers who find they cannot go forward for laser surgery because of their condition. Lasik - the most common form of laser eye surgery - is likely to create a dry eye problem which can last for six months or longer post-operation hence why existing dry eye sufferers are not suitable for the procedure. However, now thanks to the new overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses, shortsighted dry eye sufferers can enjoy all the benefits of laser surgery in terms of clear natural day time vision - but without the surgery. This non-surgical alternative comes at a time when the principal US regulatory authority - the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - has again been forced to remind the refractive surgery industry about making misleading claims.
After issuing an earlier warning in May 2009, the FDA in its Letter to Eye Care Professionals distributed at the end of September gave refractive surgery practitioners until the end of 2011 to correct any advertising and promotional materials which included unsubstantiated claims. FDA spokeswoman Erica Jefferson said: "It's about the false claims and not adequately providing consumers with information about the risks associated with the procedure." Whilst the FDA refrained from citing examples of misleading claims, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has previously highlighted a number of issues such as the use of patient testimonials which the FTC declared were "not sufficient to support a health or safety claim or any other claim which requires objective evaluation." By contrast, overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses for dry eyes can provide the same benefits as Lasik treatment and pose no greater risks than ordinary daytime contact lenses.
Speaking on behalf of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Dr. Eric D. Donnenfeld said the group supports the FDA's efforts and emphasised that LASIK is exceptionally safe when done by the right practitioner on the right patient. Hence "choosing the right surgeon is the most important thing one can do." This meant they should be members of the relevant professional bodies and appropriately certified as qualified refractive practitioners. Dry eye sufferers who find they are unable to continue wearing their daytime contact lenses because they often become extremely uncomfortable in the climate controlled environments where we typically spend most of our lives often attend Lasik consultations to try and find a better solution. Now the new overnight ortho-k corrective contact lenses for dry eyes can provide it.
