Many Americans lack knowledge about their eye health.
That is according to a new study by the American Optometric Association (AOA), which has found that only 18 per cent of Americans know what macular degeneration is.
Mark Wilkinson, chair of the AOA's vision rehabilitation scheme, said: "When left undetected and untreated, many age-related eye diseases can damage your vision permanently.
"The good news is that most people can preserve their vision with proper treatment so the key is early detection."
Symptoms of dry eye are among the problems that the older generation should look out for, as well as glaucoma and retinal detachment.
Dr Wilkinson added: "Some common warning signs of age-related vision problems include fluctuating vision, seeing floaters or flashes of light, loss of side vision and seeing distorted images."
Ortho k contact lenses can be a great product for people who are short sighted to try using.
The specially-created lenses are designed to be worn only at night and removed in the morning.
They are the perfect alternative to eye laser surgery and can help relieve
symptoms of dry eye as they do not restrict the eyeball during the day.
In addition to highlighting the problems of age-related eye problems, the AOA also suggested some nutrients and foodstuffs that can help the eye stay healthy.
Essential fatty acids such as tuna and salmon, vitamin C-heavy fruits such as oranges and grapefruit and zinc-infused meats such as liver and poultry can all contribute to a healthy eye.
