Johnson & Johnson recalled a batch of contact lenses from Macau earlier this month but this recall has now been expanded to include 24 countries.
Johnson & Johnson says that the latest recall of its of its 1-Day Acuvue TruEye is a precautionary measure.
Initially, approximately 4000 boxes of its 1-Day Acuvue TruEye were recalled in Japan following reports from some users of irritation and discomfort.
However, the recall of the 1-Day Acuvue TruEye has now been extended to countries including Australia, Singapore, Germany, France, Russia and the UK, though products distributed in the US have not yet been affected. Around 10000 boxes have now been recalled.
A company spokesman for Johnson & Johnson described it as "an isolated issue in one portion of the lens rinsing process on a particular manufacturing line affecting a limited number of lots". The contact lenses which are manufactured in Ireland are believed to be the ones affected by the problem.
Air conditioning, long hours staring at a computer, pollen and dust are also day to day things which cause discomfort in contact lens wearers. But one of the main causes of eye irritation comes from wearing contact lenses for too long, sometimes for up to 18 hours a day. The eyes become dry, sore and tired and wearers often turn back to their glasses "to give their eyes a rest".
An alternative option for those who suffer from these kinds of problems is overnight vision correction. This involves wearing specially designed corrective contact lenses overnight rather than during the day. The lenses reshape the eye while sleeping so that the users can see without them when they take them out in the morning. This type of over night contact lens is only worn for 6-8 hours leaving the eyes free to lunbricate and oxygenate naturally all day long.
This latest product recall by Johnson and Johnson follow the recall of cleaning solution in July by Bausch + Lomb. They revealed tehy were recalling ReNu Multi-Purpose Solution in Europe and the Middle East as a precautionary measure.
Any users affected by the Johnson & Johnson recall of 1-Day Acuvue TruEye can take the product, along with its original packaging, to an eyecare professional or the shop they bought it from between now and September 22nd to exchange for a replacement.
